Contrast Therapy

What is contrast therapy? How we do it here at O and why should you do it to!

Contrast therapy, also known as hot-cold therapy, involves alternating between hot and cold temperatures to help improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. It has been used for centuries to treat a variety of conditions, from sore muscles to joint pain, and has recently gained popularity as a natural, effective way to support overall health and wellness.

But first, what is it?

In contrast therapy, the body is exposed to hot and cold temperatures in quick succession, typically for periods of 2-5 minutes at a time. This can be done using hot and cold water, ice packs, or saunas and cold plunge pools. By exposing the body to extreme temperatures, contrast therapy can stimulate the immune system and help improve circulation, promoting faster healing and recovery.

How we do it here at O… 22 minutes in the sauna. Rinse off in the shower and then hop into the ice bath for 2 minutes. Repeat!

Some benefits of contrast therapy include;

Reduced Inflammation

Inflammation is a natural response to injury or infection, but chronic inflammation can contribute to a variety of health problems, including joint pain, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease. Contrast therapy has been shown to help reduce inflammation, by alternating between hot and cold temperatures, which can help improve circulation and reduce swelling.

Faster Recovery from Exercise

Contrast therapy has been shown to be effective in reducing muscle soreness and accelerating recovery after intense exercise. Studies have found that contrast water therapy has been effective in reducing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after exercise, leading to faster recovery times and improved performance.

Improved Cardiovascular Health

Exposure to cold temperatures has been shown to stimulate the cardiovascular system, leading to improved circulation and better overall heart health. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that exposure to cold temperatures led to increased blood flow, improved blood pressure, and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

Pain Relief

Contrast therapy has been shown to be effective in reducing pain. One study found that contrast therapy was effective in reducing pain and improving quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.

Contrast therapy is a safe, natural way to support overall health and wellness, with a variety of benefits supported by scientific research. By alternating between hot and cold temperatures, contrast therapy can help reduce inflammation, improve cardiovascular health, accelerate recovery from exercise, and reduce pain.
